I have a real fear of Dad being forgotten. That is something I just can't bear. Yet, when I really think about it, I know we will all be forgotten one day. The Bible tells us not to love this world because this world is not our home; we are merely passing through. I know my dad sojourned for almost 94 years, but he is home now, more alive than he ever was here on earth. That does not mitigate my pain, though. In time, people will forget him. In time, those who knew him will pass away, too. There will be no one left to remember him. But, he will always be part of every day I tread here on this earth. I will never forget him.
I am a cancer survivor of nine years (July 11, 2007). Through the process, I have learned to take one day at a time and enjoy each day God gives us.

That Nasty "C" Word: Cancer
Cancer is a hideous disease. I have been cancer free nearly five years; you can read about that here. Then, in January of this year, my dad called. After a routine colonoscopy my 84 year-old father was diagnosed with the same cancer I had beaten: colon. His was on the opposite side than mine and on the wall rather than a tumor that perforated the colon. On March 1 he had surgery and was home 5 days later. He will not need chemo. It is nothing short of a miracle for someone his age to have progressed as he has. Thank God!
The lesson is to listen to your body. Notice any changes that don't seem right. When you should have routine tests, have them. Do not linger.

Back to Work
As a child all I ever wanted to do was be a stay-at-home mom like my mother. She's 77 years old and never held a job outside the home. My dad went into the navy at the end of WWII and later transferred to the air force. When I was a baby he briefly worked 2 other jobs in addition to that.
God did not have that planned for my life, though. He knew before I was born that that was not to be the case. Today I started my 21st year of teaching English. We had to do a team building activity, which I really hate. We had to answer a questionnaire and then find someone with at least one of the same answers. One question was, "What would you do if you didn't teach?" I replied, "Be a stay-at-home mom." Someone laughed at me. Yes, laughed. A few years ago it really bothered me because I was made to feel by some people that I was less of a christian for working, but it's not like I had a choice--either before my divorce or after.
